Love the Loops: Kaiser’s Grateful Bean Café

Serving OKC Together

Positioned in the Historic Midtown district, Kaiser’s Grateful Bean Café is a staple of the Oklahoma City community. Like the city’s original streetcar system, the restaurant and Love the Loops partner has a lengthy history.

Kaiser’s has been cooking yummy treats for Oklahoma City residents and visitors for more than 100 years, but they haven’t always been serving up those dishes from their current location. Kaiser’s first opened in 1910 at North Robinson and Seventh Street. The business moved to its current location at 1039 N. Walker Ave. in 1917. The restaurant briefly closed in the 1980s but quickly resurfaced in 1989 as Kaiser’s Grateful Bean Café.

The streetcar has a history of delivering customers to the nostalgic restaurant. The original streetcar that operated in Oklahoma City from 1903 to 1947 had a stop adjacent to Kaiser’s at Northwest 10th Street and North Walker Avenue. Today, visitors can access Kaiser’s and many other businesses in the Midtown district by taking the downtown streetcar loop to the Midtown platform at the very same intersection. Oklahoma City’s only old-fashioned soda fountain and café is just steps away from the platform. The restaurant’s main courses include Mexican favorites, a variety of salads and sandwiches (the corned beef Reuben is a favorite), and classic hamburgers. For dessert, save room for homemade ice cream, ice cream sodas, floats, shakes or malts. Can’t decide? The chocolate nirvana is one of the more popular dessert items. After filling up, explore Midtown and enjoy dozens of local shops and restaurants.

If you get carried away exploring, not to worry! OKC Streetcar has five additional platforms in the district. Midtown platforms include:

  • Midtown – Northwest 10th Street and North Walker Avenue

  • NW 10th Street – Northwest 10th Street and North Robinson Avenue

  • OCU Law School – Northwest Seventh Street and North Robinson Avenue

  • OKC Memorial Museum – Northwest Fourth Street and North Robinson Avenue

  • North Hudson – Northwest 11th Street and North Hudson

  • Dewey Avenue – Northwest 11th Street and Dewey Avenue

Kaiser’s and Midtown are along the OKC Streetcar’s downtown service loop, serving the downtown community seven days a week. Check out OKC Streetcar’s hours of operation and arrival times to plan your trip!

EMBARK and OKC Streetcar have partnered with our downtown neighbors to form the Love the Loops program, promoting neighborhoods and districts along the OKC Streetcar route. Through the free partnership, OKC Streetcar and its partners educate residents and visitors about local businesses and move the city forward together by developing loyal customers.
